Other Foods in the District (Competitive Foods)

Smart eating messages should be reinforced in all of the places food is provided or sold in school districts. The healthy food choice should be the most convenient choice for students in all situations. This includes the lunchroom, of course, but also:

  • A la carte offerings at lunch
  • Birthday and holiday treats
  • Fundraisers
  • Concessions at events
  • School stores
  • Vending machines
  • Classroom incentives or prizes
  • After-school programs
  • Food in teachers’ lounges and the principal’s office

These other sources of food in school districts are often described as "competitive foods."  These food sources are also the latest focus of Federal initiatives on healthy eating for children.

To effectively implement the government-issued regulations, districts will need to positively reinforce the benefits of the changes.

We can help you do that.
