I received fresh basil leaves in a plastic bag and was told to set them on my counter rather than place in my fridge. Since it's summer and I have a LOT of basil in my garden I thought "why not try it". Well, I was surprised to learn that fresh cut basil can sit out on the counter at room temp for days before it goes bad. Pretty cool! Not only did it last for days, but it looked like it was just picked from the plant. No browning, no wilting. After about 7 days some funk started to grow, so be warned. However this is another sure way to keep fresh picked basil fresher, longer.
